Choose drinks for hydration
A general guide to everyday fluids, based on NHS (UK) guidance.
In practice
Water is a healthy, inexpensive choice for hydration; other drinks can also contribute fluids. [1]
Fluid needs can rise in hot environments, during prolonged activity, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and illness or recovery. [1]
The NHS says the UK government’s Eatwell Guide recommends 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. This is UK guidance, not a US recommendation. [1]
Water, lower-fat milk, lower-sugar drinks, tea and coffee all count toward fluid intake. [1]
